About Blue Mosque

The Mosque That Defines Istanbul's Skyline

When Sultan Ahmed I commissioned his imperial mosque in 1609, he was 19 years old and had never won a major military victory. What he built anyway — against the objections of religious scholars who considered the six-minaret design too presumptuous — became the most recognisable mosque in Istanbul and one of the most visited buildings in the world.

The Blue Mosque sits directly across from Hagia Sophia on the site of the old Byzantine Hippodrome of Constantinople. Its cascade of domes and six minarets create a silhouette that has defined Istanbul's skyline for four centuries. Inside, 20,000 handmade İznik tiles cover every surface in shades of blue, white, and turquoise — 50 different tulip designs that transform the light filtering through 260 windows into something ethereal.

Why Visit the Blue Mosque?

  • The tile work is unlike anything else in Istanbul — 20,000 individually fired İznik tiles, each placed by hand
  • The exterior, viewed from the Hippodrome or from across the courtyard, is one of the great architectural silhouettes in the world
  • The interior dome system — a central dome flanked by smaller semi-domes — creates a sense of soaring, weightless space
  • Its position in Sultanahmet puts it 200 metres from Hagia Sophia and walking distance from the Basilica Cistern and Topkapi Palace

Free Entry vs. Guided Tour

General entry is free, but the visitor entrance has a queue that can be long in summer. Guided tours offer fast-track entry plus a historian guide who explains the symbolism of the tile patterns, the engineering of the dome system, and the story of the controversial sixth minaret — context that significantly enriches the visit.
